Overcoming Hoarding

Letting go of items you are attached to, can be hard, but it’s better to let go of some things before they turn into a problem. It’s true that it’s hard to get rid off items you’re attached too; but getting rid of your old stuff is the only way to overcome your hoarding problem. Here are a couple of ways that can help make things easier for you.

- You can start by making a list of all the things you haven’t used in the last couple of months. Then you can start a garage sale and sell all the items for a throwaway price and can even make a little money at the same time.

- Make swift judgment of your mails and newspapers, or they might end up getting collected in a tiny corner of your home. Get rid of them as soon as they are no longer needed.

- Shop wisely. Whenever you shop, make sure you ask yourself whether you really need that item. Or if you are really in need of buying it, make sure you get rid of an older item to make place for the new one.

- If all this is too much for you then you can go with a slower approach. Spend at least 15 minutes a day in cleaning up a room.

Problems after a Fire

It doesn’t matter if a fire that affected your home was major or minor, because even the smallest fire damage can cause a lot of problems. Even after a fire has been dealt with, it can still cause a lot of health problems. One of the main problems is caused due to smoke.

Smoke particles are spread through the air ducts to every room of your home. This can lead to lung problems, allergies and various other problems. Smoke is also known to fill and spread through the wiring, pipelines and almost any opening of your home, staining and stifling the area with repulsive aroma.

Another problem caused after a fire is the growth of mold. This is mainly caused if the fire was put out with water. This leaves the area wet and damp thus making it prone to mold growth. These damp areas need to be cleaned soon, before the mold begins to grow. Mold can grow on damp and drenched surfaces within 2 days, and hence it needs to be cleaned as soon as possible.

Avoiding the growth of Mold in Homes

The growth of mold in homes can be a huge nuisance to the residents. Not only can the growth of mold lead to expensive repair cost, but they can also produce allergens and irritants and in rare cases toxins that can affect your health. Most of the homes suffer with mold growth during the winters due to the humid weather.
The growth of mold can lead to more problems if not tackled on time. The logical solution would be to prevent the growth of mold.

To prevent the growth of mold you will first have to control the moisture in your homes to make your homes resistant to mold growth. Here are a couple of steps you can try:

Check your homes – Inspect your homes for any signs that can lead to the growth of mold in future.  For example, you can check for any leaks in the roof or plumbing, water stains on the walls, etc. If you find any problems like these, have them repaired immediately. Sure it’ll cost you a little, but it’ll save you from paying a lot more in case of mold growth problems in future.

Make sure your home is ventilated – if your home is not well ventilated it will prevent proper airflow. This can lead to excess moisture appearing on your walls, windows and floors. You can prevent this by opening the doors and windows of your home during the day to let the fresh air enter your homes and prevent the growth of moisture. Make sure to keep a room ventilated while performing normal activities like cooking, laundry etc. as these everyday processes can also contribute to growth of mold due to the moisture created in the environment.

Check your Appliances – Your everyday use of your appliances might also be contributing to the growth of mold in your homes. You’re a/c units and dehumidifiers must be checked and cleaned to prevent them from producing a humid environment in your homes which can later lead to the growth of mold.

Target wet areas of your home - The wetter areas in your homes are more prone to the growth of mold. Prevent these situations from arising by finding any leaking areas in your homes like leaking walls or dripping pipes in your basement and get them repaired.

Causes of Sewage Spills

Sewers are the main pipelines that carry waste water from your homes or workplace. Sewage spills do not only carry horrible smells but also carry diseases like Hepatitis A, Tetanus, Giardia, and many more that can make you extremely ill.

So what causes these sewers to spill or overflow?? Some of the reasons of sewer spills are: -

a)  Pipe blockages are one of the main reasons to overflowing sewers. These pipe blockages are caused due to fatty foods thrown down the drains.

-    These fatty foods can form a lump large enough to block the drains causing it overflow. Hence don’t throw you fatty foods down the drain, instead, have a separate waste bin for your unwanted food.

-    Another reason for blockages is due to toilets being used as a trash can. So do not dump stuff down your toilet that can cause the drains in the pipes to get blocked.

b)    Another cause of sewage spills is due to rains. The excess water from rains enters the sewer drains causing them to overflow. This however can not be prevented by us as it is a natural disaster. All you can do is call professionals to take care of the sewage.

Bio-Cleanse’s bio-hazard sewage waste disposal & property restoration services can help to ease the distress caused, by a sewage clean-up.

Importance of Safe Disposal of Sharps & Needles

In today’s society, it is common to find sharps and needles all over the place. People utilize and leave these harmful objects like needles, syringes, broken glass bottles, blades, etc. in public places like playgrounds and beaches which can be harmful to the lives of other citizens. The ones most affected are the children, as their curious minds tend to think of these harmful objects as playful toys.

These sharp items can be dangerous to the lives of the public as they can lead to the spread of many harmful infections and diseases. The main risks of getting cuts and puncture wounds from sharps and needles are blood-borne pathogens like HIV, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and other harmful infections and viruses. Hence, these harmful objects should be handled with utmost care.

Since these objects can cause a lot of harm, we should prevent throwing them in public places and dispose them in a proper way. Most of the people think that they should dispose these sharps and needles themselves by throwing them in the garbage. However this still doesn’t eliminate the risk of these sharp objects causing harm to others. Throwing them in public bins can still cause a risk to people.

Sharps and needles are harmful substances that should be handled by professionals who have been trained to deal with these kinds of situations - Trained Professionals like those from Bio-Cleanse. Bio-cleanse technicians know the dangers of dealing with Sharps & needles and how to dispose them in a safe and proper manner. Hoarding Prevention Tips

Overcoming the hoarder disorder can be a real challenge, but it isn't impossible. Trying to get rid of your old habits can be hard, but everybody has to start somewhere. All it takes is one step at a time. Here are a couple of steps you can start with.

Start small - the first step to overcoming hoarding is by picking up the broom and cleaning up. You can start by cleaning for at least 15 minutes in a day, or you can start by cleaning a small portion of your room per day. As days pass try to make it a habit to clean a room at least once a day for 15 minutes. Keep increasing the time as you start getting used to the schedule.

Stop buying things you don’t need - Prevent yourself from buying stuff you won’t use a lot. Even if there’s a huge sale, try to prevent shopping for things you might just use once or twice and not bother looking at again, it will just end up in your hoarder collection. Most hoarders just shop because they got a lot of free time on their hands and don’t know how to utilize it. Hence end up buying stuff they don’t need. So before you buy something, always ask yourself, “do I need it??”

Get rid of your excess junk – Most hoarders don’t like to throw out their excess junk because they have some sort of an attachment to it and keep making excuses that they might use it in future, but haven’t used it in the past 2 years and probably won’t use it for another 5 years. Hence it is important to convince yourself that you don’t need it, you won’t use it and need to get rid of it. You can try an exercise of putting all your excess junk in a box while cleaning. Keep the box around for a month and at the end of it, get rid of the items you haven’t used.

Ask for Help – Sometimes if you need help, it is better to just ask for it. You can start by telling your family or friends about your problem. This might be embarrassing, but your friends and family can help you get out of it faster by helping you get rid of the items. Having the support of your friends and family, will help you overcome the hoarder disorder much quicker than you think.
